Does your dog start sprinting away at the mention of the word “bath?” Does your furry friend spend the entire bath time squirming and trying to jump out of the tub? It’s no secret that dog bath time isn’t a favorite for many canines.
If bathing your dog has become an unpleasant chore, turning it into a positive playtime experience sounds impossible, but it’s not! You can train your dog to love bath time and make them excited when you say “bath.” And Pogi’s has everything you need for a healthy pup.
Use these tips to help your dog become a happier and cleaner canine.
Start With a Long Walk
Even dogs apprehensive about dipping their toes in the water will enjoy a refreshing bath after a long and exhausting walk. Drop your poop bags in the trash and lead your canine to the bathroom, following your long and exciting trek. Your dog will also be tired and less willing to fight back during bath time.
Before you head into the bathroom, give your dog a wipedown with deodorizing grooming wipes!
Put a Towel or Mat in the Tub
One of the worst parts of dog bath time is the slippery tub. Dogs don’t have excellent grip on their paws for slippery surfaces, so it’s hard for them to balance while getting a bath, which can create an even worse experience.
Place a towel on the tub’s floor before adding water and putting your dog in the tub to prevent your pup from slipping all over. An anti-slip bath mat works great, too.
Fill the Tub Beforehand
Don’t turn on the faucet while your dog is standing in the tub. The loud noise and water pressure can frighten young pups, and the cold water won’t feel so good on their skin.
Let the water warm up before putting your dog in the bath. Fill the tub with water and turn the loud, scary faucet off before bringing your dog into the bathroom. Use a cup to gently pour water on your dog and clean its fur.
Be Positive
Dogs feed off your emotions, so if you’re stressed out, they’ll reciprocate those feelings. Make dog bath time a positive and playful experience by emoting happiness. Bring toys in the tub and play with your dog. Easier said than done, of course.
Make Bath Time Snack Time
Entice your dog into the bathroom with one of their favorite snacks! Smear some peanut butter on the shower wall and let them lick away while you wash them. They won’t even notice they’re in a tub when they’re distracted by delicious foods!
Try Shower Time
If none of these tips are working for your anti-bath canine, try making it a shower activity and join your pup. But can you shower with your dog? Of course!
A stressed-out, water-hating dog may be more inclined to take a bath if you’re in the shower with them. It can be easier to bathe them and pour water over their fur as you’re not worried about getting wet, either. And don’t fret about your pup peeing in the shower, placing training pads in the bathroom can help young puppies avoid accidents!
Keep in mind that a dog’s bath time should be at a lukewarm temperature, which may feel like a cold shower to you.
